UK, often referred to as Great Britain, is divided into four main Countries England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland and is situated in Western Europe, surrounded by the North Sea, the English Channel, the Celtic Sea, the Irish Sea, and the Atlantic Ocean, (the UK also has several overseas territories such as Gibraltar), and has a population of nearly 60 million, the language is predominately English although in Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland they have their own languages which are still practiced today, due to the increase in immigration many other languages are spoken in the UK including, Cantonese, Urdu and Hindu, another result of this is the many religions that now exist with their own places of worship, the climate in the UK is varied and winters can be quite harsh with freezing temperatures and snowfall, although the UK does have a reputation for raining consistently, rainfall has dropped and some areas have experienced periods of drought, summers in the UK can be hot in the months of July and August, average daily temperatures of 10ºC in winter and 20ºC in summer, due to climate changes the UK has experienced some very strong winds in recent years causing extensive damage to buildings and trees.

The UK has a landscape of lush green pastures, forests, hills and mountains, the highest mountain in the UK is Ben Nevis in Scotland at some 1,344 metres, Wales is very mountainous and the highest point is Snowdon 1,085 metres, the Pennines are a range of hills often referred to as the backbone of England, they stretch across the Peak District to the Scottish Border some 250 miles of unbroken hills, visitors who enjoy the outdoor life will undoubtedly want to explore, walkers, hikers and rock climbers will be drawn to the many hills and mountains in the UK, Northern Ireland, with its rugged landscape and many lakes offers plenty of activities for the adventurous visitor and plenty of opportunities for the keen fisherman.

Most of the coast line in the UK has become a haven for tourists, Blackpool and Southport in North West England are a tourist Mecca with theme parks and attractions for all age groups, visitors looking for peace and tranquility in the UK should visit the Lake District with its quaint villages and rambling hills, on the South Coast you will find many towns and villages with working harbours, the night life is a little more sedate, unless visitors venture in to the cities, Wales, with its picturesque coastline is a popular region of the UK for many nationalities to visit with so many Stately homes and Castles that are open to the Public, Scotland is situated in the North of the UK, a very mountainous region with many lakes (also known as Lochs), their national flower is the thistle and their traditional dress is the Tartan Kilt, (patterned woolen cloth) the different designs of tartan are associated with family surnames or family groups, there is an abundance of restaurants and take-aways in the UK serving traditional meals as well as international cuisine.
